25-Jan-08: FIA Plans to Overhaul Stewarding Procedures
It’s the 25th January 2008, I’m Christine, and this is F1 Minute.
The FIA are planning to change the way the stewarding process works at Grand Prix weekends. Previously, there were two at each race, joined by season-long steward Tony-Scott Andrews. Andrews has now retired and the FIA have taken the opportunity to shake up the organisation. Now there will be three stewards at each race, nominated by F1-neutral nationalities, so countries that have no interests within the sport. They will be joined by FIA representative Alan Donnelly who will be there to improve the decision-making process. It’s thought this setup is in a response to complaints about some of last year’s incidents – where it could take days for the stewards to come to a decision.
Also in the news today, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen are nominated in separate categories for the 2008 Laureus World Sport Awards – Kimi is up for the World Sportsman of the Year, whilst Lewis battles for Breakthrough of the Year. Ferrari have been nominated for Best Team.

When FIA introduced Tony-Scott Andrews, their aim was to prevent any difference in judgement. But we have seen that particularly in 2007 there have been so many strange situations in races and different decisions by the stewards. I hope this new system will prevent any situation like those we have seen last year.
