21-Sep-08: Ferrari Boss Discusses Raikkonen and Singapore
Welcome to F1 Minute for the 21st September 2008.
Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has been talking about the ever increasing number of street circuits on the calendar, which he thinks is a problem. He believes that street circuits don’t allow many opportunities for overtaking, and regarding the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, he said: “I have the impression it will be one of those letdowns where you cannot overtake, like Valencia.” He added that to keep on encouraging street circuits on the calendar would be a bad thing for Formula 1.
Montezemolo has also been discussing the team’s decision to extend Raikkonen’s contract after he has failed to live up to expectations this year: “I know some disagreed when we lengthened his contract, but we are talking about the world champion, who won the title in his first year at Ferrari.” He said that Kimi will soon be back on form and getting results once more.
Finally, Lewis Hamilton is preparing for a busy week, as not only does he have to prepare for the race next Sunday, he is also planning to attend the Court of Appeal hearing in Paris tomorrow. Let me know how you think the result will pan out at F1Minute.com.

For once in my life I agree with Luca. Street circuits are pointless. As I said in today’s live commenting 23 corners in 3 miles means field spread and deadly dull racing. The reason for night races is nothing to do with time zones. It is to allow trackside ads to be seen better and to improve the ’show’. It will look spectacular but there cannot possibly be good racing.

I expect the appeal of Hamilton’s penalty to succeed. He gave the position back. Had he followed Kimi through the Bus Stop, he would have been in the same position at that point, right on the Ferrari’s back.

I think that the penalty decision will keep the same since he did use short cut to overtake, under that situation, Hamilton should get penalty, but maybe a little bit too much for him.

I agree with Ray’s comment and street circuit maybe a “bore” race, too, as there is less chance to overtake, too many corners, no surprise… (of cause, except incident.)

And yet, Bernie seems convinced that street circuits are the way forward. Like Alonso said at the time - why introduce the circuit at Valencia when there’s a perfectly good track right next door?

My opinion is still that the situation of Formula 1 is not due to the circuits but to the rules. And, anyway, If I have to see a boring race I prefer a boring race in Singapore instead of a boring race at the Hungaroring.
