The second week of pre-season testing began today with Nico Rosberg taking top honours behind the wheel of the Mercedes. It was a gloomy start to the day for the German, who found himself completing just a handful of laps before being sidelined by a gearbox problem. Thankfully, the team got the car going again and Rosberg managed to squeeze ahead of second fastest driver Kimi Räikkönen by just one hundredth of a second.
Fernando Alonso was in action for Ferrari, his first testing day of the year, and he made the most of it, completing over 100 laps and setting the third fastest time.
There were two red flags during the day - the first caused by Sauber’s Esteban Gutiérrez who brought his car to a halt out on track with a fuel system problem. The second red flag was for Charles Pic, who found his Caterham developed a gearbox problem that brought him to a halt at turn 3.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning Pastor Maldonado set the fifth fastest time for Williams, debuting the brand new FW35.
