This is F1Minute for the 9th April 2011.
Sebastian Vettel took pole position in Malaysia today but it was a vastly different session from his previous pole in Australia.
In Free Practice 3, Vettel wasn’t looking too strong - Lewis Hamilton led the way from Mark Webber and then Jenson Button, with Vettel in fifth. The only notable action further down the order was from Paul di Resta who found himself spinning several times through the 60 minute session.
With qualifying underway, the early drop-out was Pastor Maldonado in the Williams, who finds himself 18th. The big name drop-out in Q2 was Michael Schumacher, who was dumped out of the top ten by his own teammate Nico Rosberg. Thus the top ten shootout for pole, except it really only featured two McLarens and two Red Bulls.
Hamilton led the way most of the final ten minutes, but at the very last second, Vettel stole pole position from him by just a single tenth of a second. That leaves Vettel on pole, with Hamilton behind and Webber lining up in third.
