The FIA were planning to bring in V4 turbo powered engines for the 2013 season, but the regulation change has been delayed, and tweaked. The Formula 1 Commission met to discuss the future of power in the sport, and decided that the four-cylinder concept was not appealing at this moment in time. Some of the manufacturers, Ferrari and Cosworth, were wary of the costs of developing these new engines. The teams agreed to V6 turbo units from 2014 instead.

McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, told reporters that the decision is a positive step for everyone involved, not least just because they could agree on something. He said: “I think that’s positive because clearly there has been a range of different opinions expressed and felt. So to achieve a consensus among all the parties was very positive.” He added that whilst it is important to attract new manufacturers to the sport, it’s also important to keep the existing participants happy as well.
