2010 Preview

From the F1 Digest 2010 Season Preview:

After a couple of tough, scrappy but impressive years, the defending champion going into 2009 took a bit of a back seat. Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren had some serious aero issues at the start of the season, and instead of fighting for wins, Lewis was lucky to be fighting for points. This was just the test he needed, though, to prove that he wasn’t just a good driver who had been plonked into a good car. This was the year he had to prove his worth. It wasn’t just a dodgy car that he had to worry about, when Hamilton admitted lying to the stewards in Australia. Under the safety car, an incident with Trulli had warranted investigation, and after misdirecting the stewards, heads rolled at McLaren.

Hamilton moved on, though, and by the time we reached Hungary, things were turning for McLaren. Hamilton took the first of two wins – the second at Singapore, and whilst he retired twice in the season, there were three other podiums to add to his replica trophy cabinet.

This year, he’s teamed up with Jenson Button and we’re all waiting to see how the two champions will get on. We know Hamilton doesn’t give an inch, and we’ve seen relationships falter when it was Alonso in the other seat. If he and Button work together, they will be a heck of a match for the rest of the field. If they can’t get on, there’s going to be fireworks. I’m keen to see either.
