It’s the 3rd March 2010 and this is F1 Minute.

Following the revelation yesterday that US F1 were closing down their bid to make it to the grid this year, Ken Anderson has finally spoken out. The co-owner of the team has said they are still keen on getting into F1. “We have applied to the FIA to hold our entry until 2011. It was supposed to be confidential, so I could not really comment on it. It seems to have leaked out though. We are waiting for a reply from the FIA and are working with them. In the mean time, there is nothing for the employees to do, so we have told them to stop working on the current car until we have a decision.” The FIA released the entry list with no US F1, and no Stefan GP either. There are just 12 teams this year.

Meanwhile, Campos have officially changed their name to Hispania Racing F1 Team, to be known as HRT F1. Not the best acronym they could have chosen, for various reasons.

That’s all for today, I’ll be back tomorrow with another F1 Minute.

FIA Formula One World Championship

Following recent reports on the interpretation of clauses in the Concorde Agreement concerning the concept of a Team’s ‘participation’ in the FIA Formula One World Championship, the FIA wishes to make the following clarification:

From a sporting and regulatory point of view, each Team that has registered for the Championship is obliged to take part in every event of the season. Any failure to take part, even for just one Championship event, would constitute an infringement both of the Concorde Agreement and the FIA Regulations.

Waiting in the Wings

The FIA released the official 2010 Formula One Championship Entry List today, in the process revealing the full team names of next years entrants, including the yet to be announced Virgin Racing.

Conspicuous by his absence was Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari, despite team mate Sébastien Buemi making the list. The team are yet to confirm their final 2010 line-up, but in the meantime Alguersuari is left out in the cold.

Welcome to F1 Minute for the 30th November 2009.

The FIA released the official 2010 entry list today, with plenty of to be confirmed notes. A couple of things stood out though, with Manor Grand Prix being listed as Virgin Racing. We’ve been expecting an announcement from Virgin to this effect, but it looks as though the FIA might have beaten them to it. Brawn GP are still listed as Brawn but it’s pointed out they have indicated their intention to change to Mercedes Grand Prix before next year.

Red Bull have been signed up with Renault engines, although Christian Horner has pointed out they still have not come to a final decision. Also, notably, Toyota are missing off the list, as you would expect, and there is no mention of whether the grid slot is going to be filled by anyone, with Sauber still facing an unknown future.

On that subject, Mario Theissen confirmed that he will be staying with BMW as head of motorsport, rather than moving to Sauber.

That’s all for today, please join me tomorrow for another F1 Minute.

FIA – World Motor Sport Council

The World Motor Sport Council met in Paris on 24 June 2009. The following decisions were taken:

FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

All currently competing teams have committed to the FIA Formula One World Championship.

There will be no alternative series or championship and the rules for 2010 onwards will be the 2009 regulations as well as further regulations agreed prior to 29 April 2009.

As part of this agreement, the teams will, within two years, reduce the costs of competing in the championship to the level of the early 1990s. The manufacturer teams have agreed to assist the new entries for 2010 by providing technical assistance.

The manufacturer teams have further agreed to the permanent and continuing role of the FIA as the sport’s governing body. They have also committed to the commercial arrangements for the FIA Formula One World Championship until 2012 and have agreed to renegotiate and extend this contract before the end of that period.

All teams will adhere to an upgraded version of the governance provisions of the 1998 Concorde Agreement.

The following teams have been accepted for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship.

TEAM

SCUDERIA FERRARI MARLBORO
VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES
BMW SAUBER F1 TEAM
RENAULT F1 TEAM
PANASONIC TOYOTA RACING
SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO
RED BULL RACING
AT&T WILLIAMS
FORCE INDIA F1 TEAM
BRAWN GP FORMULA ONE TEAM
CAMPOS META TEAM
MANOR GRAND PRIX
TEAM US F1

In view of this new agreement and with the prospect of a stable future for Formula One, FIA President Max Mosley has confirmed his decision not to stand for re-election in October this year.

FIA – 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship

The FIA has noted the latest press statement from FOTA.

The FIA is disappointed but not surprised by FOTA’s inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport. It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith.

The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the Championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of Formula One.

The deadline for unconditional entries to the 2010 FIA Formula World Championship will expire this evening.

The 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship entry list will be announced tomorrow.

2010 FIA Formula One World Championship – Due Diligence Q&A

June 15, 2009 by Christine

How are you ensuring that applicants are adequately and securely funded?

We are using professional advisors to make checks on the substance behind any funding sources on top of obtaining reviews of pertinent contracts and other relevant documentation.  Bank references have been supplied in many cases.

What is involved in the Due Diligence process?

We have requested documentary evidence to support all the new teams’ assertions, in particular with regards to funding.  Thus we have been provided with accounts, contracts, multi-year business plans and other supporting material. On the technical side we have asked for a thorough description of their capability, key staff, project plans, capital assets (present and planned for), organisational charts, and so on.

Where there are key sub-contractors required we have asked to see contracts and letters of intent. This extends to the sponsorship side, where plans and any descriptions of existing relationships )are required.  In all these aspects we have requested evidence that substantiates any claim in the teams’ plans.

In the background to these evaluations, where key individuals were identified on the funding side, our forensic accountancy advisors have run reputational checks, alongside the checking of factual data supplied.

Once we had formed an opinion of the serious contenders we asked them to come to London to be questioned face to face by the due diligence team.  Then a short summary report on the top five was sent to the FIA President.

Have you enlisted the help of other experts to help with the Due Diligence?

It would not have been possible to perform this exercise without expertise from our advisors, Deloitte, who have assisted us throughout. The forensic ability to give advice on the documents provided is invaluable.

How many applicants were there and were all of them taken forward to the due diligence process?

There were 15 applicants and we took 12 of these through the process initially.  We interviewed nine of the more promising potential teams.  There were a surprising number of well-presented entries, with substantial funds behind them.

Is it really possible to perform due diligence on all of these organisations in such a short amount of time?

It has been intense.  The one advantage is that the short timescale has revealed the teams that really have their plans together and the answers to hand, and those that are making it up as they go along.  If they are going to be in Formula One they need to be able to respond quickly and competently.  Thus the condensed time line has ‘stress tested’ the new entrants.

Have you been surprised by how many viable teams have applied to enter the championship?

Yes it was a surprise in some ways, but more reassuring than surprising.  Formula One is a fantastic prospect and with the financial reforms to lower the barrier to entry to realistic levels it is good to see such a strong market for new teams. This exercise has demonstrated that the only reason there have been vacancies on the F1 grid for many years was the excessive cost of participation.

I’m Christine, this is F1 Minute and these are your headlines for today, 4th January 2008.

The FIA have announced the Official 2008 Entry list, with names filling 21 of the 22 seats, and only Force India’s number two left undecided. Super Aguri are not happy with the announcement, as they claim their drivers are not confirmed yet, despite Davidson and Sato being listed. A spokesperson for the team said that they do intend to retain the pair for the upcoming season, but negotiations are still ongoing and no contracts have been signed yet.

Jean Todt has been interviewed in the German press, and revealed that Michael Schumacher was offered the top job at Ferrari in Todt’s place. He said: “He would have been the best candidate for this job, but he did not want it.” Todt also said that he may only attend a couple of races next year, he is confident that Raikkonen will not be walking away from Ferrari anytime soon, and the team remain friendly with Ross Brawn, despite him being a rival now.

That’s all for today, have a great weekend, and join me on Monday for another F1 Minute.
