06-Oct-08: BMW Lineup Remains Unchanged for 2009

Listen to this episode

Welcome to F1 Minute, it’s the 6th October 2008.

BMW have become the next team to confirm their driver lineup for 2009 and it remains unchanged. Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld line up beside Christian Klien as test driver. BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen said, of the pairing: “We are in no doubt that we will again achieve our ambitious aims with them in the team’s fourth year.” Of course, this news narrows down Alonso’s options for next year, with his main choice now being between Renault and Honda.

Elsewhere today, Bernie Ecclestone has hit back at the statements Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo made regarding Singapore. The team boss said the safety car rules make F1 a circus. Ecclestone has apparently responded to this with: “After the weekend Ferrari had, their president should have shut up and kept his head down. If Massa loses the world championship, he will know the team were responsible. He would have destroyed everybody in Singapore if he had kept going.”

That’s it for today, I’ll be back tomorrow with another F1 Minute.

03-Oct-08: BMW Will Keep Up Development This Season

Listen to this episode

This is F1 Minute and it’s the 3rd October 2008.

We heard earlier in the week that McLaren are pushing forward with development this year and it’s good news to hear that BMW haven’t given up on the title, either. Technical director Willy Rampf said that they will still develop despite Kubica being 20 points down on Hamilton. He said: “We will continue though. We will try to have at least small modifications and updates for the next races and hope to get closer to the top. We are not far away, not the team and not Robert as our leading driver.”

Elsewhere today, Autosport.com is reporting that the FOTA are looking at a new concept of sharing commercial revenues between the teams equally. Currently, teams get a bigger share, the higher they finish up the constructor’s championship. You’d imagine the larger teams wouldn’t appreciate getting less money, but Autosport has asked Frank Williams who said it’s the best way of making things more competitive. I’d love to know what you think about this potential new scheme, leave your thoughts at F1Minute.com.

28-Sep-08: Alonso Wins Safety Car Hit Singapore GP

Listen to this episode

It’s the 28th September, welcome to F1 Minute.

After an intense two hour race, Fernando Alonso emerged the surprise winner of the Singapore Grand Prix following two safety car periods.

The first few laps were nice and clean, and running got underway with Massa stretching a lead from Hamilton. Alonso started on soft tyres, and pitted really early for hard tyres, having changed his strategy because it wasn’t working. Then Renault team mate Piquet smashed into the wall and the safety car came out. Kubica and Rosberg had to pit for fuel, although the pit lane was closed, so they received penalties. As more drivers took their stops, Alonso worked his way to the front.

Despite serving his penalty, Rosberg managed to finish second, and Hamilton picked up third. Massa suffered another Ferrari pit stop blunder as he was sent on his way into the path of another car and with the fuel hose attached. He finished way down the order. Raikkonen was running fifth but crashed into the wall in the last few laps. At the end of the race, they all looked pretty exhausted.

That’s it for today, I’ll be back tomorrow with another F1 Minute.

14-Sep-08: Maiden Victory in Italy Makes Vettel Youngest Winner

Listen to this episode

This is F1 Minute for the 14th September 2008.

From an unexpected pole position to a superb victory, Sebastian Vettel has become the youngest ever F1 race winner by taking his maiden win in Italy.

The race got underway with a safety car start due to the weather conditions, but it was only a couple of laps before racing began proper. Vettel pulled out an early lead, whilst team mate Bourdais was a lap down having stalled on the grid.

The first few laps were amazingly clean, with very few incidents. In fact, the race itself only saw one retiree in the form of Fisichella. He collided with Coulthard during an overtaking manouvre that dislodged his front wing. The wing went under the car and the Force India headed straight into the tyres.

Hamilton one-stopped his way up the field, but made another bad tyre decision by taking on extreme wets when the rest of the field had inters. He had to pit an extra time, but finished a respectable 7th, just behind Massa. Raikkonen woke up towards the end of the race and finished 9th.

Congratulations to Vettel, and the other podium finishers Kovalainen and Kubica. I’ll be back tomorrow with another F1 Minute.

06-Sep-08: Hamilton Gets Pole for the Belgian Grand Prix

Listen to this episode

Welcome to F1 Minute, today is the 6th September 2008.

Hamilton has put McLaren on pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix tomorrow, posting a time three tenths of a second faster than second place Felipe Massa. Kovalainen aimed for the front row as well, but missed, settling behind the Ferrari, with Raikkonen in turn behind him.

For the second race in a row, both Toro Rosso drivers made it into the third session of qualifying, although didn’t get any higher than 9th and 10th. For a moment it looked as though Force India might be able to get into Q2, as Sutil was running in 14th, but inevitably he was pushed down the order. Both Force Indias and Hondas start at the back of the grid, plus Nakajima who had a very poor showing.

Heidfeld had a good day though, qualifying 5th well ahead of Kubica in 8th, trying to ease some of the pressure on him from BMW.

There was no rain to speak of, and no major incidents, and it looks as though tomorrow may be a dry day as well.

That’s it for today, I’ll be back tomorrow with another F1 Minute.

05-Sep-08: Massa and Alonso Make a Good Start

Listen to this episode

You’re listening to F1 Minute and it’s the 5th September 2008.

The Belgian Grand Prix weekend got underway today with two free practice sessions, one led by Massa and the other by Alonso.

Free Practice 1, Massa was fastest ahead of Raikkonen and then Hamilton. It stayed dry for most of the session, although the track started out wet after overnight showers. There were no major incidents but Trulli had some electronic problems and Kubica moaned to his team for pretty much the entire morning.

Free Practice 2 saw some rain, and some incidents. Webber, Fisichella, Raikkonen, and Piquet all came off track, with the first two unable to continue. Alonso was fastest ahead of Massa and Kovalainen.

After both sessions, drivers were allowed to practice starts from the grid. In FP1, Bourdais couldn’t take part because his car came to a stop at the end of the pitlane, and in FP2 Kubica couldn’t take part because he stalled it. How embarrassing.

That’s everything for today. Join me tomorrow for another F1 Minute.

24-Aug-08: Massa Takes a Controversial and Unconfirmed Europe Win

Listen to this episode

This is F1 Minute for the 24th August 2008.

The European Grand Prix at Valencia got underway relatively calmly, with Massa holding his lead over Hamilton and the pair streaking away from the rest of the pack. There was a wide field spread and overtaking seemed almost impossible. The expected safety car situation never happened.

That doesn’t mean there weren’t incidents though. Nakajima crashed into the back of Alonso on the first lap, with the Renault having to stop. Sutil spun and hit the wall, and Raikkonen was the other retiree. He had a botched pit stop that saw him pull away with the fuel rig attached, injuring the mechanic on duty. He was stretchered away and we don’t yet have an update on how he is. A lap or so later, and the Ferrari pulled to the side of the track spewing smoke from the engine.

Massa’s Ferrari held together though and he took the win from Hamilton and Kubica. He is under investigation from the stewards, for being released in the pit lane directly into the path of a Force India. We are still waiting for their findings.

With two unresolved items, it looks like I’ll be back later with another F1 Minute.

23-Aug-08: Massa Takes Pole for European GP

Listen to this episode

Welcome to F1 Minute for the 23rd August 2008.

It looked as though we might have had a strange couple of front rows as qualifying kicked off in Valencia today. Kubica led Free Practice 3 in the morning, adding to the list of drivers who are showing well around this new circuit. In qualifying, Vettel led two of the three sessions, and both Toro Rosso cars got into the final qualifying shoot out.

Unfortunately we lost both Honda and both Force India drivers plus Coulthard in the first session, and with the Toro Rosso’s scraping through to Q3 we also saw some big names knocked out in the second. Alonso finished the day in 12th.

However, it was business as usual for the Ferrari and McLaren boys. Hamilton posted a provisional pole, only to be knocked down by Massa. Kubica slipped into third and Raikkonen finished up fourth.

The pole position has actually been moved this morning from it’s orginal position on the left hand side of the grid to the right, after Charlie Whiting observed the practice sessions and decided that was the more favourable line to take.

That’s it for today, I’ll be back tomorrow with another F1 Minute.

02-Aug-08: Hamilton Lines Up on Pole at the Hungaroring

Listen to this episode

Welcome to F1 Minute for the 2nd August 2008.

Hamilton took an easy pole position at the Hungaroring today, just ahead of team mate Kovalainen. Hamilton also had the jump on Ferrari in the first Free Practice session of the day, leading Massa, and then Glock.

On to qualifying, and the only major incident happened in the first session. Heidfeld was on a hot lap, and stumbled across Bourdais and another car negotiating a corner. It looked like Heidfeld believed he was being held up, and he also ran wide at the final turn, causing some serious fist waving at the Toro Rosso. Heidfeld starts on the grid in 16th.  In the second session, Vettel and Button did supremely well to finish 11th and 12th respectively, whilst Rosberg got through to Q2 but couldn’t set a lap time due to hydraulics problems.

Finally the third session had Glock leading the way and then second for a good few minutes, but in the end, common sense ruled. Hamilton leads Kovalainen, Massa and then Kubica.

That’s it for today, enjoy the race, and I will be back with the results tomorrow in another F1 Minute.

27-Jul-08: Kubica and BMW Expect Good Things in Hungary

Listen to this episode

Welcome to F1 Minute, it’s the 27th July 2008.

With Poland not having it’s own Grand Prix, Robert Kubica is counting Hungary as the nearest thing to his home race. A large number of Polish fans are expected to turn up in Budapest, and Kubica is hoping for their support. He also enjoys the track as it’s where he raced his first Grand Prix in 2006. “As a driver you always have a special relationship with the track where you had your first Grand Prix. However, it is not for these reasons alone that I like this track. For most of the lap you have some steering angle, which means you rarely get a break, and this is made worse by the fact the straights are very short.” Doesn’t sound that much fun to me!

Meanwhile, BMW boss Mario Theissen says he is looking for a podium finish this weekend. “In 2006 the weather turned the race into a cliffhanger, and in 2007 an offensive strategy really put us on our mettle but rewarded us with a podium place. For 2008 the goal is to make it onto the Budapest podium for the third consecutive time.”

That’s all for today, please join me again tomorrow for another F1 Minute.
